What is In the Grove?

In the Grove is a group of volunteers from around the town centre, working together to set up activities for youngsters.

The group’s aim is to fill the gap left by North Somerset Council’s youth service following the recent cuts and to make sure there are activities on offer in the area for younger children too.

In the Grove bid for some funding from North Somerset Council and was given £27,700 for youngsters in Weston centre and hillside areas.

The plan is to put on an event in February 2013 (please note, we have changed the date from October 2012) to find out exactly which activities young people are most interested in. There will be a variety of taster sessions taking place throughout the day and the most popular ones will be taken forward to be regular activities.

The group is also looking at piloting a street play project whereby some local streets are closed to traffic for a regular time slot every week or month so children can play safely outside.

In the Grove is made up of representatives from the YMCA, Barcode youth cafe, Barnardos and Weston Central Children’s Centre, plus Councillors Clare Kingsbury-Bell and Holly Young, Becky Condron from Weston-super-Mums, CHAT and representatives from local schools.

The group is now looking for volunteers, particularly young people and residents, who may be able to help with putting on events and activities.
